  • Pearisburg, VA, Manager Kenneth Vittum led the effort to meet the town’s need for health services and support for families caring for other family members.
  • Wake County, NC, solved a shortage of experienced paramedics and improved its EMS service by using existing resources more efficiently.
  • In Fort Smith, AR, plant closings and an increasing number of layoffs resulted in some homeowners being unable to maintain their properties. Together, elected and appointed officials, including City Administrator Ray Gosack, created a program to help homeowners meet minimum maintenance requirements and maintain their neighborhoods.
  • Upper Arlington, OH, created a new program to reduce the burden on its emergency services and connect elderly residents to resources.
  • Throughout a blizzard in Elgin, IL, Manager Sean Stegall used the city’s social media channels to update residents on the city’s snow removal operations. During the course of the two-day storm, he posted approximately 100 messages on Twitter and Facebook and won kudos from residents for the city’s response.

Measuring Results

An important part of service delivery is to assess the results.

Local governments use the information they gain to:

  • assess policy options
  • make sound management decisions
  • communicate service and financial improvements to citizens

ICMA’s (International City/County Management Association) Center for Performance Measurement helps local governments improve the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of their services by collecting, reporting, and analyzing, data and applying it to improving performance.

Innovation in Public Services

The Alliance for Innovation is a network of local governments that partners with ICMA, and Arizona State University to transform local government by accelerating the development and dissemination of innovative practices.
